Although the deal(s) actually went down late last summer, or a veritable ice age ago in real estate time, it’s only recently that Stephanie Soo finished making some pivotal changes to her new Atlanta mansion. And because she’s a YouTuber, many of those upgrades centered around controlling the amount of light filtering into her new home, with the addition of more recessed ceiling lights and pricey automated shades on the home’s many windows.
As for why Soo somewhat abruptly departed Los Angeles last year, she’s cited two major reasons: family and finances. The 26-year-old was born in South Korea but spent nearly her entire childhood in Atlanta, where her parents and much of her extended family continue to reside. And of course, Georgia’s taxes tend to be far more pocketbook-friendly than California’s, as do the real estate prices.
To illustrate that last point, contrast Soo’s former L.A. home with her new Atlanta digs. Back in 2019, she paid about $2.3 million for a one-story, farmhouse-inspired house in Los Angeles that she successfully flipped last year, in a bidding war, for almost exactly $3 million. That house weighs in at well under 4,000 square feet, shoehorned onto a lot that spans about a fifth of an acre in a not-particularly-glamorous part of Sherman Oaks.
By contrast, her mansion-sized Atlanta home also cost $3 million but lies in the exclusive Buckhead neighborhood pocket of town, and features six bedrooms and 7.5 baths in nearly 8,500 square feet of living space. It’s also set on a full acre at the very end of a quiet cul-de-sac, walking distance to a leafy and well-maintained park.
(One note: while the listing says the home is in Buckhead, Google Maps indicates it lies just beyond the Buckhead boundaries. Either way, it’s in a very prime area.)
Constructed in 2018 by local homebuilder Jason Rosen and last sold for $2.5 million that same year to Boston Consulting Group bigwig Edwardo Sackey, the Atlanta home also packs in a numerous luxe amenities — a state-of-the-art Control4 home automation system that operates the lights, music and security cameras; a whole house water filtration system; an outdoor loggia with a fireplace; Viking and SubZero appliances; Steelcase doors and LED lighting throughout. There are formal gardens and big lawns in both the front and rear yards.
Like many influencers’ homes, the new Soo estate is filled with whites and neutrals throughout, providing a clean and bright backdrop for future videos. Skylights add additional warmth to the interiors, as do rich slabs of quartzite in the kitchen and master back.
Soo has long ranked as one of YouTube’s most popular mukbangers, an offbeat genre of creators who consume large quantities of food on camera — often while gossiping to their subscribers or having mundane conversations with friends. In Soo’s case, she retells true-life crime stories and cracks jokes while eating meals, which has made her rich and famous. Today, her two channels sport a combined total of nearly four million subscribers and well over 800 million lifetime views.
Interestingly, Soo and her longtime partner Rui Qian only plan to stay in Atlanta “for a few years,” before returning to the West Coast, where they’ve said their ultimate goal is to eventually raise a family in the swanky Southern California community of Newport Beach.
