Federal assistance coming to Jackson

The White House announced late Tuesday night that President Biden had approved Gov. Reeves' request for a federal emergency declaration in response to the city of Jackson's water crisis.

This comes as two pumps at the O.B. Curtis water treatment plant failed due to the flooding of the Pearl River.

The declaration authorizes the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to "coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures," the White House said in a statement.

The statement from The White House goes on to say "...An emergency exists in the State of Mississippi and ordered Federal assistance to supplement the state’s response efforts due to the emergency conditions resulting from a water crisis."

The press release says that emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance, will be provided at 75% federal funding for a period of 90 days.
